Log Hives – a tutorial for design & construction

Interactive, international Live-Stream PST (San Fransisco time zone, CA, USA)

During this live stream event, Michael Joshin Thiele of Apis Arborea will go step by step through the process of making vertical and horizontal log hives and share lots of video footage, necessary tools, and other resources. This lifestream event will explore various arboreal hive/nest designs and integrate groundbreaking research data and fundamental changes in life sciences as resources for a paradigm shift for apiculture strategies in the Anthropocene.
We also will look at the reemergence of ancient and traditional ways of apiculture, such as the “Zeidler-craft” of caring for bees in living trees. The rewilding of honeybees and nest restoration are becoming increasingly essential for honeybees to survive. As wild bees survive in non-managed ecosystems and nest sites, they represent a resource for new strategies for contemporary apiculture and a fundamental shift in bee stewardship.

This live stream gathering will provide a meeting environment that allows for interactive learning and discussions among participants.  For all levels of beekeeping.

8th Annual North Coast Farmers' Convergence

Growing resilient farms - comming together to share stories, successes & skills.

NCO is pleased to announce the 8th annual North Coast Farmers’ Convergence. The MendoLake Food Hub and the School of Adaptive Agriculture are leading the charge on this annual event, which brings together food producers from Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma and Humboldt counties, along with local food retailers, chefs and food activists.

The North Coast Farmers’ Convergence is a celebration of our region’s growing, local food system and the vital profession of farming in Northern California. Since the inception of this event, the Farmers’ Convergence has brought together over 150 local farmers, ranchers, retailers and advocates for a day of networking, education and inspiration. According to participants, successful outcomes of the day include: forging successful connections that enhance our local economy; linking farmers with needed resources; and sparking new or renewed buyer contracts for food producers. The 8th Annual Farmers’ Convergence promises to build on the successes of previous years with new workshops, speakers and additional, intensive-educational sessions. There is an amazing lineup, stay tuned!

Re-envisioning Beekeeping in a time of crisis — College of Marin

The accelerating loss of animal species and biodiversity reflects the urgency with which we need to move towards the preservation of honeybees. This course is an introduction into a system-based approach to beekeeping. We will combine contemporary entomological research, the study of natural wild beehive environments and cutting-edge trends in life sciences to better understand the complexities of the life and the needs of honeybees. With the newly gained knowledge of the course, participants have new tools to creatively adapt to fundamental challenges to the survival of honeybees. The Instructor will share various aspects of his work, among them examples from current rewilding projects, the craft of traditional tree-apiculture, and bee-centric strategies for beekeeping. We will study the essential role of honeybees in sustaining life on our planet and at the same time explore ways to preserve their life and foster environments conducive to their health and dignity. For all levels of beekeeping; beginners welcome.

Arboreal (log) Hives — Live Stream

Changing the paradigm of Apiculture

“Apis Arborea” is an attempt to redefine our relationship with bees and to create a new paradigm of caring for them.

We will look at the reemergence of ancient and traditional ways of apiculture, such as the “Zeidler”, the craft of caring for bees in living trees. The rewilding of honeybees and nest restoration are becoming increasingly essential for honeybees to survive. As wild bees survive in non-managed ecosystems and nest sites, they represent a resource for new strategies for contemporary apiculture and a fundamental shift in bee stewardship.

During the live stream event, we will explore various arboreal hive designs.
